(Casual Day)

作者:Sue <curran39@idt.net>

*****************************************

They must have arrived while I was in the rest room, that's the only reason I could think of that they missed noticing me, they weren't prone to such oversights.

Both were dressed in casual clothes and, while I had seen Mulder in weekend clothes before, I had never seen Scully in anything but business attire. She looked so different in jeans and a sweatshirt, the fatigue and stress usually so evident on her face was muted, eclipsed by a younger, more carefree persona. Both of them bore only a superficial resemblance to the pugnacious individuals that were habitually reprimanded in my office. They were in a booth sitting across from one another, backs against the wall, feet on the bench. If I didn't know them, I would have assumed they were just a young couple enjoying a fall weekend. Perhaps they could have been tourists, fresh from the cursory tour of the Hoover Building, stopping for lunch to have a friendly argument about which of the Smithsonians to visit next.

But I did know them. They were my two most infuriating agents, always toeing that line and pushing at the boundaries of common sense -- placing their trust, their faith, their lives only in the hands of the other.   Baffling, annoying, at times sanctimonious and very, very alone; they frustrated the hell out of me.

My seat afforded me an unobstructed view of Scully and with just a slight turn of my head, Mulder, unless one of them moved to the end of their bench, I concluded they could not see me.   Realizing that this was indeed an unusual situation, I decided a little 'agent watching' would do no harm.

In the moments when the surrounding clatter was at its lowest I could even hear bits and pieces of what they were saying. Right now I was catching phrases like 'universal invariant', 'nine minutes' and 'artificial organic compound'. Whatever they were discussing, they were in obvious disagreement, but it was friendly dissent. Mulder's facial expressions resembled that of the eight year old boy who had just dipped in ink, the pigtails of the girl he had a crush on. At the other side of the table Scully was valiantly attempting to suppress the grin threatening the corners of her mouth.

I wondered what they usually talked about. How did they fill the countless hours spent together? When I was a field agent with a partner, we discussed families, women, sports, sex, other agents -- I was fairly confident the phrase 'universal invariant' never came up. I suppose that with their frightening intellects and shared experiences there were very few other people with whom they could have a meaningful conversation. Heck, I was willing to bet that there were very few other people that could understand their meaningful conversations.

The waitress approached the table and began to set out their food. Scully swung around and sat forward on the bench, while Mulder retained his relaxed pose. The arrival of food did nothing to curb their conversation, indeed it seemed to spur them on. Scully was now using her fork to emphasize points while Mulder countered with catsup drenched french fries.

The lunch hour was waning, more customers were leaving, so I could hear longer snatches of their conversation. They had apparently left the realm of science behind and were now discussing Bureau gossip.   Good, this was normal behavior. Nope take that back, they were reviewing the gossip they had heard about themselves. I nearly laughed out loud when I heard Scully state, with a sly grin, that if she were stuck being Mrs. Spooky she demanded a large, gaudy and ridiculously expensive diamond. Mulder's rebuttal probably should have gotten him slapped with a sexual harassment suit, but instead elicited a quickly contained snort of laughter from her and caused me to choke on my coffee.

They slowly subsided into a comfortable silence, punctuated with an occasional, 'get your own' as Scully stole fries from Mulder's plate.

Their silence was broken when Mulder began to relate some newer gossip he had overheard. He had traced the originator back to another Agent, Tom Colton, with whom they apparently had prior, negative experience.   As he continued the story Scully started to smile, by its conclusion she was laughing so hard tears were streaming down her face.

It hit me then, I had never seen her laugh before, actually short of tight smiles and an occasional bark of derisive laughter, I had never heard either one of them laugh. How incredibly sad. Apparently making Scully laugh aloud was quite an achievement, Mulder was basking in the sound, like a worshiper whose sacrifice to the gods had been deemed acceptable.

My waitress picked this time to ask if any additional food or coffee was required. After assuring her that all was well, I looked back toward their table, only to discover my sight was blocked by a pair of long, jeans clad, male legs. Mulder was standing directly in front of me. Not at all surprised by my presence, he just stared down and then slowly swiveled to gauge the tableau available to me. He watched Scully digging through her purse for several seconds and then turning back to me with a friendly but deadly serious warning in his eyes, flashed a sardonic smile and said, "Nice view sir."
